concepts and elaborations

I watched robin hood the other night and the scene where they are in Robin Hood’s secret camp really got me thinking. I remember watching that movie when i was a little kid, and always wishing i could build something like that. I think that is why i am so interested in doing game design, because it kind of gives that same freedom, and even gives you the chance to virtually walk around in what you have built. Anyway, just something i have been thinking of.

some idea from the critique:
1. give pieces a title, it an be an integral part of the piece. Max suggested on the road.
2. think about a goal or rules for the project. what is the person trying to do, what happens when they run into a wall.
3. is this considered an intimate piece or could it be a performance? Not alot of art is just made for the person using it. However, for being such a small piece, it turns the whole world into a work of art. It would also be interesting to see more then one of these in the same space, seeing a bunch of people walking around with one. From the outside, it is hard to tell what someone is doing with the piece, however that could add more to it.
4. What could advance this piece, what could it leave behind. I have been thinking about that and have two ideas. On a larger scale think it would be neat to have it paint a gps picture with the piece. IT would take a gps beacon and trace where it was going and it would be relayed to a server which could paint the picture on a large scale. For a smaller scale i think it would interesting to have a projection with an infared led tracing, and somehow take information from who is holding it onto what is traced or displayed on the screen.

So this is going to serve as my idea and project portfolio. Please feel free to critique and comment on everything. Here are some concepts ive currently been working on:

1. Digital Nomad – GPS

The concept for this piece comes from the idea of portable gps systems found in car. You plug where you want to go into them, and it tells you how to get there exactly. You put your faith into an electronic machine and expect it to go where you want. The idea behind our (me and Justin Pierce) gps system is that you dont get to pick where you want to go, the electronics pick for you. It is interesting to me to be lead around blindly by electronics, and brings up the question of who is leading who in the electronic age.

2.Pledge

This is something im thinking of doing in next semester’s electronic media class. my concept would include a cuttout of each state of the us, and would light up or turn off everytime the state is pressed. It would be interesting to me to find people from every state and get them to say one word from the pledge of allegance. I think this would be an interesting view of different people from different places in the country and would provide some insight into how the people in this country are different but how we are also the same.
